Clytie, 1895–1896, Frederic Leighton (1830–1896)
Leighton’s last great masterpiece was left unfinished in his studio at the time of his death, though in spite of illness he had managed to bring it to a near state of completion.
The subject is Clytie who was rejected by Apollo as his lover and who is shown in a state of inconsolable grief, her arms outstretched to sense the warmth of the sunlight, while the life drains from the rest of her body.
