The cult of the artist, typical of Romanticism and developing throughout the nineteenth century, encompassed the studio, which was a workshop as well as a showplace, a reality as well as a projection – a space where mess and magic coexist.
This beautiful catalogue accompanies a major exhibition at Leighton House, the world-famous former studio and home of Frederic, Lord Leighton, President of the Royal Academy. The featured works, which are drawn primarily from the exceptional Katrin Bellinger Collection – alongside some remarkable museum loans – explore in a variety of media diverse aspects of these creative spaces: the luxurious and the humble studio, the palette as a symbol of the artist, the contrast between the romantic 'fires' of inspiration and the bohemian stove, the importance of windows and mirrors, the rise of the female model, the studio corner as a zone of authenticity, and the role of photography in shaping the image of the artist as modern celebrity, with special focus on London and Paris.
It is published to accompany the exhibition Magic and Mess: The Artist's Studio Revealed at Leighton House.
