The Venetian influence is evident in Leighton’s studies of female subjects, which are a feature of his paintings during the transitional period of the 1860s. For example, ‘A Noble Lady of Venice’ shows a woman draped in rich oriental silks, smelling a vase of flowers.
It is not a portrait in the traditional sense but more an idealised portrait of an imagined figure, the sensuousness of the drapery and indication of the rich musk of the flowers, taking precedence over ideas of character or identity.
