La Nanna (Pavonia),1859, Frederic Leighton (1830–1896)
This is one of a group of at least five different paintings taken from the Roman model Nanna Risi, each in a different attitude. Here she wears a peasant costume with a decorated bodice and a massive sleeve, which supplies an important element in the composition.
Her hair is arranged in a complex plait, entwined with pearls, and the title refers to the peacock fan apparently held in her left hand. An orange tree in the top corner introduces a motif familiar in Leighton’s early paintings.
